A 1.2 Ma record of glaciation and fluvial discharge from the West European Atlantic margin ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Zaragosi, S.; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Gibbard, P. L.; Eynaud, F.; Giraudeau, J.; Turon, J. L.; Cremer, M.; Cortijo, E.; Martinez, P.; Rossignol, L..
The correlation of continental sedimentary records with the marine isotope stratigraphy is a challenge of central importance in Quaternary stratigraphy, particularly in Western Europe where long records of glaciation on land areas are particularly rare. Here we demonstrate for the first time the interrelationship of events during the last 1.2 Ma in an ocean-sediment core from the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic), SW of the Channel. The identification of discharge variations from tributary river systems to the 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver during glacio-eustatic sea-level lowstands demonstrates the correlation of the marine sediment stratigraphy to the expansion and recession of the European ice-sheets. The amplitude and chronology of European ice-sheet...

Distributional patterns and possible origin of leafhoppers (Homoptera, Cicadellidae) Zoologia
Nielson,Mervin W.; Knight,William J..
The zoogeographical distribution of 42 cicadellid subfamilies and their assigned tribes and genera is compiled with distributional maps and proposed dispersal pathways of genera that are shared interzoogeographically. Possible origin of the subfamilies and tribes is proposed in an ancestral context from which the more modern extant groups evolved whereas origin of genera is in a more modern context. Notwithstanding their complex biogeography, the distributional data of the higher groups indicate that all of the cosmopolitan and near cosmopolitan subfamilies arose during early Cretaceous or possibly the late Jurassic period (140-116 m.y.a.) when continental drift was in its early stages. Nearly all of the New World and some Old World subfamilies are...

ENVIRONMENTAL AND GENETIC EFFECTS ON PRODUCTION TRAITS OF EWES ORIGINALLY FROM DISTINCT ENVIRONMENTS Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Nelson Manzoni de; Moraes,José Carlos Ferrugem.
Wool production and reproductive performance components of similar genotypes, brought from distinct production areas, were evaluated during five years trial at similar environments, such as, joining season and stocking rate on winter improved pasture. The least squares means revealed that the origin (breed) effect concentrated upon the Corriedale ewes wool production, whereas in Romney females it affected the reproductive performance. In the abscence of interaction between origin (breed) and year for most variables, it was assumed that the farm management procedures and/or selection criteria applied on hoggets were determinant of the subsequent lifetime production within each genotype examined. Expecting a better reproductive performance in Romneys, mainly...

Etude isotopique (Sr-Nd) de l'origine des depots fins holocenes du littoral atlantique (S-O France) ArchiMer
Parra, M; Trouky, H; Jouanneau, Jm; Grousset, F; Latouche, C; Castaing, P.
The fine-grained sediments of the West Gironde mud patch derive mainly from materials supplied via the Gironde estuary. Between 1500 and 1200/1300 years BP and 300/400 years BP and the present day, the Sr isotopic and chemical compositions of the estuarine silty clay inputs are the same. In contrast, these compositions were different during the period 1200/1300 to 300/400 years BP These variations probably reflect anthropogenic activities including cultivation and agriculture, in the Garonne and Dordogne drainage basins during the medieval period. Modern silty clay sedimentation in the mud flats of the Marennes-Oleron basin and Perthuis Breton is characterised by the occurrence of important quantities (between 40 and 90 % of the total) of detritus that...

Importance of origin in rice purchasing decisions in Talca and Temuco, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schnettler,Berta; Ruiz,Danilo; Sepúlveda,Oriana; Sepúlveda,José; Denegri,Marianela.
Considering the increase in imports of forestry, farming and livestock products to Chile, the existence of different consumer segments was evaluated according to the relative importance of origin in decisions to purchase rice in Talca and Temuco in central-southern Chile. With this purpose, a direct survey was administered to 800 consumers, 400 in Talca (Maule Region) and 400 in Temuco (Araucania Region). Using a conjoint analysis and hierarchical clustering, five market segments were distinguished. The largest group (35.4%) gave great importance to the origin of the rice. The second largest group (25.1%) gave greater relevance to the packaging. For the third and fourth largest groups (15.4 and 12.5%, respectively), the cost of the product was the most...

Pb, Zn, Cs, Sc and rare earth elements as tracers of the Loire and Gironde particles on the Biscay shelf (SW France) ArchiMer
Jouanneau, Jm; Weber, O; Grousset, Fe; Thomas, B.
The western Atlantic continental margin of the Bay of Biscay is characterised by a combined macro-tidal and a high energy environment. These conditions are responsible for the essentially sandy sedimentary cover along with well-defined fine deposit zones observed on the shelf. The main continental sources are the Loire, Gironde and Adour Rivers. It is estimated that 2.4 to 2.5 million tons of fine sediments are supplied annually to the ocean from these rivers of the French Atlantic coast. The Gironde and the Loire contribute with 84 % and the Gironde with 60 % of this amount. Previous studies of the distribution of the clay mineral assemblages and of oligo-elements have distinguished two provinces (north and south Biscay areas) according to these riverine...

Preliminary checklist of the naturalised and pest plants of Timor-Leste Naturalis
Westaway, J.; Quintao, V.; Jesus Marca, S. de.
Timor-Leste is one of the world’s newest nations, but the island of Timor has a long history of human habitation and land use which has played a significant role in shaping the 15 current vegetation and flora. Movement of people, plants and materials has seen the introduction of hundreds of plants to Timor from foreign lands, many of which have established naturalised populations, with some exerting detrimental impacts on Timorese agriculture, the environment and livelihoods. Plant health surveys conducted by Timorese and Australian biosecurity agencies have enabled compilation of an inventory of more than 20 500 naturalised and pest plant species based largely on recent field collections (now lodged in herbaria) supplemented by observational and...

[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: A new genus and species of raninoidian crab (Decapoda, Brachyura) from the Lower Cretaceous of Colombia, South America Naturalis
Luque, J..
A new raninoidian crab, Bellcarcinus aptiensis gen. nov., sp. nov., is described from the upper Aptian of Colombia. The new genus displays a combination of traits seen among some ancient species within the Necrocarcinidae and Orithopsidae, obscuring its family placement. This taxon represents the sixth known genus of pre-Albian raninoidians worldwide, and the fourth known from Colombia, in addition to Joeranina, Planocarcinus and Colombicarcinus. Bellcarcinus gen. nov., together with other Early Cretaceous finds from Colombia and Brazil, represents early stocks of stem-group frog crabs, which indicate that tropical South America might have played an important role in the early radiation of the group. Size as indicator of origin of salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae) Naturalis
Nordhagen, J.R.; Heuch, P.A.; Schram, T.A..
Salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) from farmed Atlantic salmon have been implicated in the drastic sea trout and salmon stock declines found in Ireland and Norway. Can salmon lice from farmed and wild fish be distinguished? The hypothesis has been advanced that the treatment of salmon infested with salmon lice with organophosphate pesticides has resulted in the evolution of early maturing, smaller female lice, which are favoured because they have the chance to reproduce before treatment. Salmon lice on wild fish have been reported to be larger and have more eggs in their egg strings (sacks) than lice on farmed fish. The question is whether the size differences between the lice are genetically fixed or an expression of phenotypic plasticity....

WHERE IS BASMATI RICE COMING FROM? A GLOBAL TRADE–RELATED OVERVIEW AgEcon
Giraud, Georges; Pirzada, Syed Wajid H..
Rice contributes on 20% towards human calorie intake of the world population and 30% of Asian population. Worldwide paddy rice crop was 668 million tonnes in 2008, while rice trade during the year was 30 million tonnes. Trade represents 7% of overall rice cropping. Basmati rice export counts for high value and low volume. Although Basmati crop is primarily from two countries, specific data related to Basmati export are scarce. Basmati trade constituted 8.3% of rice world trade during 2008, with a record of 2.45 million tonnes. Recent volatility of prices affects rice trade market, but less Basmati price that is still the highest on world rice market. This paper depicts the present situation of Basmati trade and its business prospects as a tradable...
